The Trial of Jesus Christ

Events Leading to Your Salvation

The trial of Jesus Christ happened when Jesus was only (roughly) 33 years old. He had preached throughout the land of Israel about God's Kingdom, the core of his message. He had 12 disciples with him during his ministries to help spread the word.

Speaking about God's Kingdom was not, or didn't seem to, be a crime. The trial of Jesus Christ was due to to his claim to be God's Son, which was blasphemy. Unfortunately for those condemning him, this was the truth, which he proved too many times to count.

Trial of Jesus Christ
Events Leading to His Arrest

The trial of Jesus Christ begins with his betrayal by Judas and his denial by Peter, both of which were his disciples. During the Last Supper, Jesus told His disciples that the one who will betray him was in the room.

Can you imagine that moment?

Then he told Peter "before a rooster crows tomorrow, you will deny 3 times you even know me." Jesus prophecied that He would have a trial and be put to death by the Romans, taking the penalty for our sins.

Trial of Jesus Christ
His Arrest and betrayal by Judas

After the Last Supper, Jesus and his 11 disciples went to the Mount of Olives to pray. Jesus asked them to pray they won't fall into temptation.

After this, Jesus withdrew from them to pray.

He knew his death was very close and "broke down" in prayer. An angel appeared from Heaven to strengthen him.

When he returned, he found his disciples sleeping. "Pray that you won't fall into temptation"

He told them. Then a group of guards and religious council led by Judas came to arrest him.

"Are you betraying me Judas?" Jesus asked. "Did you have to come with clubs and swords? I was with you every day in the temple, and you never arrested me. But this is your hour, when darkness reigns."

The disciples fled, but as Jesus was being led away, Peter followed at a distance.

Trial of Jesus Christ
Peter's Denial

Led into the courtyard of the high priest, He was left by a coal fire. As Peter paced the porch that ran around the courtyard, somebody recognized him as being a disciple of Jesus. He denied being a disciple.

Then he sat next to the coal fire. In the mean time, the guards took Jesus and beat him. As somebody else recognized Peter as being a disciple, he denied their claims.

Jesus was brought before the high priest, who asked him if He was the Messiah.

"If I tell you, you will not believe me" Jesus told them.

"Are you the son of God?" the High Priest asked.

"I am" Jesus told them.

He found Jesus guilty of blasphemy and sent him to a man named Pilate, the governor of Judea.

As Jesus was leaving, he was recognized once again as being one of Jesus' disciples. For the last time, he denied even knowing Him, and Jesus looked at him while He was being led away.

It was only then that Peter remembered Jesus' prediction.

Trial of Jesus Christ
Pilate and Herod

Jesus was brought before Pilate, a man responsible for the crucifixion of thousands. The guards told him he was trying to overthrow the nation. Pilate saw this as a case of local religious nonsense not to be taken seriously, unless it causes civil disobedience.

Then one of the guards told him of his claim to be God's son. Upon hearing THIS, Pilate began to take the case more seriously. Jesus was from Galilee, so Pilate sent him to Herod.

Upon arriving at Herod's palace, Jesus was asked to perform miracles. Jesus said nothing.

The scribes mocked Him for calling himself a King, then Herod joined in on the mocking. Herod sent him back to Pilate, saying it was his problem.

Trial of Jesus Christ
The Trial Begins

Jesus appeared back before Pilate, and was faced with an angry crowd with very few of his followers. Pilate told the crowd that he had examined Jesus' case and found no charge against him deserving death.

The crowd was very blood-thirsty, and in their eyes, Jesus' claims to be God's son completely disrespected them.

The crowd persuaded Pilate to sentence Jesus to death. Every year on Passover, a criminal sentenced to death was released, a tradition practiced in the land. Jesus was placed next to a murderer, and because Pilate didn't want to take the responsibility for the blood of Jesus, he let the crowd choose who will be released.

To his astonishment, the crowd chose to release the murderer! The trial of Jesus Christ resulted in His sentencing to be crucified on a cross.
