Jesus Last Supper was the last meal Jesus ate with his 12 apostles. It was symbolic in a very special way, and it was where Jesus made 2 predictions that came true the very next day. The words he spoke during this meal got even his closest friends confused...and scared. The following events are true, as recorded in the books Matthew, Mark, and Luke.
Jesus Last Supper What Was It?
Passover is a celebration in memory of God sparing the Jews from the plague of the firstborn in Egypt. The Last Supper occurred the day before this celebration. Jesus and his 12 apostles gathered together for the meal, and Jesus made his first prediction before eating the meal. He told his 12 apostles that this meal would be the last meal he would eat together with them. He told them the time of his death was very, very close.
While eating the meal, he took some bread and prayed over it. He gave all 12 apostles a piece of bread and told them "This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in memory of me." Then his 12 apostles ate the bread. He offered them wine, telling them "This is my blood, which is poured out for you."
Jesus Last Supper Then The Unthinkable Happens
Jesus made an announcement that turned the atmosphere of the room a different color. "The one who will betray me is here in this room. I will die in the way it has been written for me, but it will be horrible for the one who betrays me." All 12 apostles suddenly became very confused, wondering who the traiter will be.
Then during the confusion, Peter tells Jesus he is ready to go to jail and even die with Jesus. Then Jesus makes a startling prediction: "Before a rooster crows tomorrow, you will deny 3 times you even know me." Peter couldn't believe his own ears! The day after the meal, on Passover, Jesus was denied by Peter, and betrayed by Judas, which led to his arrest, trial, and death, all of which were foretold during Jesus last supper. Looking back at it after I read the story the first time, I can't help but try to imagine what it must've been like to be Peter. Although what he did was completely wrong, and in his shoes I would have made different choices, let's not let Peter's mistake overshadow all the good things he's done. As far as Judas goes, I really wonder if Jesus prayed for him...ponder that.
