Jesus Christ taught using something called a parable. A parable is a story with a spiritual meaning. He relied on parables heavily to teach his message instead of just telling his listeners "how it is." He did this for the following reason: "with their eyes they do not see, and with their ears they do not hear, nor understand." But by telling his followers a parable, they could easily remember and, with time, understand it as a big picture. I admire him so much because he didn't seem to push his message onto those that didn't want to hear him. He let his followers come to him.

But because God is a good judge, he must punish the guilty. Let's say I took a pen and drew a little dot on a piece of paper in New York and told you that represented your time here on earth. Then, from that dot, I drew a line to China and told you that was where you would spend your eternity (which actually never ends). Would you choose to live for the line or for the dot? Jesus wants us to accept him as our savior, and trust him with our daily decisions, our finances, our marriage, and every other aspect of our lives. He tells us to turn away from our sin. The purpose of Jesus dying on the cross was to take the penalty for our sins.
